MANILA, Philippines – Disinformation agents — those who spread lies, half-truths, and propaganda — are stepping up their game in time for the 2025 polls.
And so the Commission on Elections (Comelec) — with the available resources, able partners, and the enormous powers it wields during the election period — is proactively addressing the associated threats and risks.
The poll body has formed the Task Force KKK (Katotohanan, Katapatan, at Katarungan), which will enforce guidelines against the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in campaigns and elections.
It will be scanning social media and the internet for deepfakes, cheapfakes, and soft fakes about the election processes, and will go after the administrators of troll farms, fake accounts, and astroturf groups that will create and post false, malicious, and misleading information using AI.
What are the promises and challenges of this initiative? Lawyer Lourdes Alcain, the chief of staff of Commissioner Nelson Celis, sits down with Rappler managing editor Miriam Grace A. Go in this latest episode of Ask Your Comelec. Catch the conversation on Friday, October 18, at 6 pm. – Rappler.com
