MANILA, Philippines – It’s a family affair in the best way for the upcoming Philippine staging of Into the Woods as Lea Salonga’s child, Nic Chien, was announced as the latest actor to join the musical’s cast.
Theatre Group Asia (TGA) shared on Monday, February 10, that Chien will be playing Jack in the musical.
“When the fun is done, he steals what he can and runs!” TGA teased Chien’s character.
Chien’s mother Salonga was one of the first cast members to be revealed. The Tony Award-winning actress will be portraying The Witch, a role she previously played when she was 23 years old. This upcoming run will be her first musical in the Philippines in six years.
Chien previously acted in the 2017 run of Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group’s Matilda, where he played Alice.
In Into the Woods, he will be acting alongside comedienne Eugene Domingo, who will be playing Jack’s mother.
Meanwhile, real-life couple Nyoy Volante and Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante will be playing the Baker and the Baker’s wife, respectively.
Arielle Jacobs will take the role of Cinderella.
TGA also recently announced that Joaquin Pedro Valdes will be playing Prince Charming and the Wolf.
Based on the book by James Lapine, Into the Woods sees some of the most beloved fairy-tale characters — such as Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, Ridinghood from Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella — come together in one “world.” The story follows a childless baker and his wife, who cross paths with a witch who places a curse on them as they strive to start their own family.
Into the Woods will be staged at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati City in August, for a limited run. Ticketing details have yet to be announced. – Rappler.com
