MANILA, Philippines – Poy Erram admitted he has been a “distraction” for TNT in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals.
So the big man is seeking help to address his mental health issues as he aims to turn over a new leaf, and hopefully, help the Tropang Giga in their quest to win a second straight championship this season.
Erram is expected to play a pivotal role in the do-or-die Game 7 against Barangay Ginebra on Friday, March 28, at the Araneta Coliseum, especially with the way he performed in an 87-83 win in Game 6 that kept TNT alive.
“I’m not afraid to say that I’m seeking help because I need it. This is for my team, my family, my kids,” said Erram in Filipino.
Erram has been the talk of the best-of-seven affair, not because of his play but his quick temper.
In the latest episode of his on-court antics, Erram figured in a shouting match with Tropang Giga head coach Chot Reyes during a crucial stretch of their Game 5 loss.
While refusing to make it an excuse, Erram said his father’s death has taken a toll on his mental health, saying he has been in a “hard place” since.
But Erram showed he is a difference-maker when he has his head in the game.
With TNT on the brink of losing the series in Game 6, Erram delivered his finest outing of the finals by churning out 14 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal.
He poured 10 points in the fourth quarter and made multiple clutch plays down the stretch that allowed the Tropang Giga to force a winner-take-all match.
“I really want to win to make up to the team for everything that happened. I’m being a distraction to the team, that is no secret, you’ve all seen it. I really want to win for my teammates, of course for my family, and also for God,” he said.
Erram said he draws strength from his wife and three children as he tries to shake off hurtful comments from fans.
“I always look at the crowd, my wife and my kids are there, they’re complete. I always pray to God to remove my anxiety, the evil in my heart and my mind,” said Erram. – Rappler.com
