The fact that reelectionist Bong Go topped the Senate elections was not a surprise — the last surveys had put him in first place. But former senator Bam Aquino emerging a strong second, and former senator Kiko Pangilinan safe in fifth place? That was a surprise.
There were many other surprises: Akbayan getting the most number of party-list votes in history, the underwhelming performance of Bong Revilla, Ben Tulfo, and Abby Binay, and the unexpected strength of Rodante Marcoleta.
