A new chapter of Philippine sports history has been written as Carlos Yulo became the country’s first double Olympic gold medalist. Yulo reigned in both the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise and vault finals in the 2024 Paris Games, giving the Philippines its second and third Olympic gold medals overall and its first-ever medals in Olympic gymnastics. He joins Tokyo Games gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz in the record books.
In boxing, both Tokyo Games silver medalist Nesthy Petecio and Olympics newcomer Aira Villegas bagged bronze medals in the women’s 57kg division and 50kg division, respectively.
With the two golds from Yulo and the two bronzes from Petecio and Villegas, the Philippines is set to at least match its all-time best four-medal haul from the Tokyo Games in 2021.
World No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena, one of the country’s strong medal bets, fell short of a podium finish as he ranked fourth in the men’s final.
Meanwhile, weightlifters Vanessa Sarno and Elreen Ando serve as highly intriguing wildcards as the Philippines celebrates its 100th Olympic participation year.
